It can do lots of things but Mantra has the power of vex and vops which Karma CPU has minimum support of and XPU will never support it (basically code based/node based workflow for shaders). Karma is much faster and has two modes:- CPU and XPU (CPU + GPU). Last personal project : Quiet Strength A procedural architecture. Anyways, since USD is new stuff, and SideFX thinks it will replace everything later on and Mantra has outdated code, they focused on Karma making it native to USD and also uses MaterialX (same as USD but for Materials). USD is new universal file format for 3d scene (extreme oversimplification), Solaris is SideFX's implementation for doing scene building, layout and lighting for USD specifically so that you don't fully have to leave making stuff strictly in USD and totally change your workflow but rather only leave use a new workflow for scene building etc. But honestly, you shouldn't really look at Houdini if you are a total beginner to 3d and don't understand much of the stuff. Often, when learning something new and complicated, it is hard to decipher where your blind spots are, which was the case for me prior to asking this question. So as to your point about laziness, I hope you can see that I did indeed make a concerted effort prior to asking this question, but I can understand why you would think otherwise. Moreover, a lot of the YouTube videos were very similar in this way, and coupled my misunderstanding of what Mantra was at the time, I ended up stopping several videos prematurely to go find another one that I hoped would make more sense Solaris is Houdini’s environment for layout, lookdev and lighting and is built on USD, the open source Universal Scene Description format created by PIXAR. So then I continued researching more about Karma and something lots of YouTubers mentioned called Solaris, but I felt that a lot of the websites told me what it was, but didn't give enough context for a beginner. So at that point, for some reason, I assumed Mantra was some sort of outdated, but similar, version of Karma. They instead seemed to focus mainly around lighting and materials, things I was already semi-familiar with. Confusingly to me at the time, none of these videos used the word "Mantra". Building assets for the asset gallery is relatively easy and it allows. In researching Karma, a lot of the videos mentioned Mantra, so I googled this term "Mantra" and found some explanations that were a bit vague to me, so I searched on YouTube, and watched several beginner level videos on the topic. Houdini 19 has brought us the ability to make a gallery of assets for use in Solaris. Actually, I did do research before asking this question, however, I was still confused which is why I asked this question.
